Social Security Benefits
In the United States, social security represents the OASDI program, which stands for federal Old-Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance (OASDI) program. This program offers several benefits to people. Here is a brief description of some of these benefits:
Social Security Benefits:
- Insurance benefits: These benefits are available to people at the minimum age of 62 years. These are reduced benefits as the full benefits are dependent on the year the retiree was born. Workers starting their benefits prior retirement ages lead to reduction in their benefits which depends upon the total months of start of these benefits before normal retirement.
- Spouse’s benefits: Not only the current spouse of the retiree but also the former or divorced spouses have the eligibility for these benefits provided they at least had a successful 10 years marriage. A worker is able of generating these benefits for maximum 5 spouses provided they were in succession after legal divorce procedure which must have taken place after a successful marriage life of minimum 10 years. The spouses who are not working may apply for these benefits only when the worker had applied for the retirement benefits.
- Widow's benefits: In case the worker who was covered by Social Security dies in between, then the surviving spouse is liable to receive the benefits on their behalf. In some of the cases, these benefits are also available to the divorced spouses. In case the spouses start taking benefits prior the normal age of retirement, then the actual retirement benefits are reduced as per a certain formula.
- Children's benefits: These benefits are available to the children of the retired or disabled workers. These children can avail these benefits as the survivor or the dependant provided they are below 18 years of age. Children till 19 years of age may also apply if they are still pursuing their graduation.
