Premenopause Treatments

Menopause refers to the time when a woman stops menstruating and is incapable of getting pregnant. However, before menopause sets in, the woman goes through a transitionary period known as premenopause or perimenopause. During this time, hormone levels in the body fluctuate as slowly the ovaries stop producing eggs and this phase begins almost 2 to 8 years before the onset of menopause.

As the hormone levels fluctuate, the woman can experience many undesirable symptoms that can wreak havoc in her life. Some of the symptoms include mood swings, dryness of the vagina, hot flashes, night sweats, depression, weight gain, reduced fertility, irregular or absent menstruation, loss of bone density, loss or lack of sexual desire and sleep disturbances. Hence, many women are looking for effective premenopause treatments.

Some of the premenopause treatments are as follows:

Many women are prescribed birth control pills to help with their symptoms. As these pills contain estrogen, the declining estrogen levels are controlled and this helps to alleviate many of the symptoms, like dryness of the vagina, hot flashes and irregular menstruation.

In case the pills are not desirable, the woman can use a therapy known as cyclic progestin therapy. In this, an intrauterine device having progestin is used to help with heavy menstrual flow.

Some women even resort to hormone replacement therapy, but now it has come to light that the risks of the therapy outweigh the benefits. This therapy can increase the chances of a woman getting breast cancer or cancer of the endometrium.

Hence, many women opt for natural premenopause treatments. One of them involves changing lifestyle habits like getting sufficient number of hours of sleep, complete stoppage of alcohol and smoking, taking supplements of multi-vitamins, doing regular exercise, drinking lots of water and eating a diet rich in fiber and calcium.

There are even herbal premenopause treatments that help to alleviate the associated symptoms. Extracts from black cohosh is known to alleviate the symptoms of premenopause, like water retention, muscle aches, irregular menstruation and feeling chilly.

Other herbs that are used to treat the symptoms of premenopause is Dong quai, chasteberry and maca root.
