There is a long ongoing debate on whether it is possible for a woman to get pregnant during menstruation. Women are different even though the birthing process is same. But, there is something unique about every woman’s ovulation cycle. However, many doctors agree that there is a high chance that women can get pregnant when they have their periods. But, in reality, the chances of getting pregnant are low and not absolutely nil.
However, doctors also say that there is no foreseeable timeline for women to get pregnant. The chances of pregnancy always exist for a woman throughout the month. It is also important for a woman to understand the ovulation cycle. During every menstrual cycle the ovaries in the reproductive system of a woman release an egg and this is called ovulation. The ovulation takes place on an average on the 14th day. However, even this time period can vary from woman to woman. Sometimes, a woman may not have any ovulation but she still experiences bleeding during the menstrual cycle. So, more and more doctors are finding out that it is quite complicated to understand a woman’s menstrual cycle.
After ovulation, the egg starts moving towards the fallopian tube and if there is a sperm available then it fertilizes the egg and the woman gets pregnant. Even the hormones like estrogen and progesterone have a role to play in this ovulation cycle. Also, an unfertilized egg lives up to 24 hours in the fallopian tubes and the pregnancy can occur anytime during these 24 hours. That is why it is considered that periods have no bearing on the fact whether a woman can get pregnant or not.
However, during the pregnancy the body lacks progesterone completely and the woman’s body needs this hormone to sustain the pregnancy. However, it is also possible that the pregnancy can trigger the production of progesterone immediately. Also it is highly likely that when women have sex immediately after the last day of their menstrual cycle the chances are higher to get pregnant. Vaginal bleeding can be misleading several times. The sperm can also live inside the body of the woman for an average of two to three days if the woman has a healthy reproductive system.
So, there is no hard and fast rule as to when a woman should get pregnant and when a woman should not. Women can get pregnant even immediately after delivering a baby, or during breast feeding. At this time usually the periods are absent and still a woman can get pregnant.
