Causes Of Hot Flashes In Men

Although the condition of hot flashes is more commonly linked with women especially during menopause, the condition is known to occur in men as well. However, the causes of hot flashes amongst men certainly vary from those in women. The chief aspect associated with the occurrence of hot flashes is fluctuations in hormonal levels in the body, which in turn may be triggered by several factors. If you thought that women are the only ones who go through menopause, your knowledge is definitely incomplete.

Male menopause, known as andropause, is accompanied by hot flashes. This condition in a man’s life is part of the ageing process that is evident in the form of certain other symptoms such as gain in weight, sleep disorders and decreased growth of hair. Infections such as HIV, AIDS or tuberculosis could also result in hot flashes and night sweats amongst males. Studies also reveal a correlation between the development of tumors and hot flashes in men. While hot flashes accompanied by pain in the testicles could indicate the occurrence of prostrate or testicular cancer, hot flashes could also signify the presence of tumors in the pituitary gland or the hypothalamus. An abrupt decrease in the levels of the sex hormone testosterone or androgen could also lead to hot flashes. Finally, hot flashes could be triggered by the food additive MSG or mono sodium glutamate or could be a repercussion of the intake of certain medications such as nifedipine, niacin and calcitonin as well.

As in the case of women, symptoms of hot flashes also vary from one person to another in men. A hot flash typically generates a feeling of heat in the upper region of the body resulting in redness of the skin and minor to profuse perspiration. The signs of a hot flash are in particular more evident on the face, neck and chest. As the condition subsides, the individual tends to feel cold, moist and uncomfortable. Some of the other feelings experienced during this condition include giddiness, fatigue, and heart palpitations. When occurring at night, hot flashes are known to disturb one’s sleep pattern.

Men experiencing hot flashes must consult a doctor to identify the underlying cause of the condition. In general, a blood test is conducted to evaluate the level of testosterone in the body as its deficiency is regarded as the chief cause. In such cases, the administration of testosterone therapy may prove beneficial. Certain other simple remedies that can aid in minimizing the intensity and discomfort linked with hot flashes include wearing light and loose fitting clothes, consuming lots of water to prevent dehydration, keeping the rooms well ventilated, avoiding stressful circumstances and opting for yoga and meditation.
