What Happens If A Man Has Too Much Estrogen ?

Although the importance of estrogen in women is a relatively more discussed subject than its role amongst the male species; there is no refuting the fact that this hormone has its own significance amongst men as well. However, the level of this hormone is much lesser in males in comparison to females.

There are 3 known variants of this hormone, namely estrone, estradiol and estriol, whose production is associated with the adrenal glands and ovaries. While the primary functions of estrogen in females include the development of secondary sexual characters and maintenance of the menstrual cycle; in men the hormone is linked to the production and maturation of viable sperm, adequate sexual libido, maintaining the heart rate, imparting strength to the bones and apt functioning of the brain.

Estrogen is undoubtedly vital towards the general well being in men but when present in excessive levels, this hormone ends up poses health problems resulting in the medical condition of estrogen dominance. Elevation in estrogen in men could be a consequence of several factors such as ageing; repercussion of certain health disorders; obesity and administration of steroids, antidepressants and antibiotics.

With the increase in age, the level of a hormone called testosterone declines in the body of men, which in turn gives free way to the rise of estrogen. An enzyme known as aromatase is known to be involved in the conversion of testosterone to estrogen. A higher than normal level of this enzyme in the body is believed to result in the condition of estrogen dominance. Occurrence of tumors and disorders associated wit the lungs, pituitary glands, testes, thyroid and kidney are also known to trigger an increase in the level of the hormone. Finally, one’s food habits also influence the level of estrogen. Men who are high with their intake of alcohol and meat are prone to estrogen dominance. So are those who do drugs such as marijuana and cocaine.

The condition of estrogen dominance in men has numerous adverse implications such as increase in weight; decrease in sexual libido; sexual dysfunctions; disorders related to the brain, skin, bones and liver owing to lack of testosterone triggered by elevated estrogen; and development of feminine physical characteristics like breasts, reduction in facial hair growth and a higher pitched voice. High levels of estrogen can be avoided by consuming a healthy diet that is low in processed foods, refraining from excessive consumption of alcohol and exercising regularly. However, estrogen therapy has been found to be beneficial towards the treatment of prostrate cancer but many doctors do mot recommend the same owing to the side effects attached to the treatment.
