How Can You Test Estrogen Levels ?

Hormones play an extremely significant role in the human body. Their area of influence stretches from the physical to the emotional domain. One such hormone that is crucial in terms of fertility and emotional balance amongst females is estrogen. This hormone regarded as the primary female sex hormone can cause problems when present in excess or lower than normal levels.

The fluctuation in estrogen levels could be consequence of improper functioning of the ovaries or a repercussion of menopause. Excess estrogen in the female body is evident in the form of symptoms such as sudden and unexplained gain in weight, tenderness of breasts, headaches, heavy menstrual flow, temperamental changes and anxiety. In contrast to this condition, signs of estrogen deficiency are apparent in the form of dryness in the vagina, night sweats, hot flashes, pain during copulation and depression. These symptoms are quite similar to the ones experienced during the peri-menopausal phase.

Evaluating the level of estrogen in the body is conducted via blood and urine tests. However, since estrogen is present in the body in three forms, namely estradiol, estriol and estrone, therefore the diagnosis incorporates more than one solitary test. The procedure for drawing blood for the blood test is the same at all diagnostic centers.

The blood is taken out from the arm. The health professional would tie an elastic band around your upper arm. This step is carried out with the aim of stopping the blood flow, which in turn enlargers the veins present below the band. It is easier to locate and draw blood from enlarged veins. The specific site where the needle would be inserted is cleaned with alcohol and thereafter the needle is pierced. Attached to the needle would be a tube that collects the required quantity of blood.

Once the procedure is over, the band is removed for blood to flow normally. The health professional would now a place a gauze pad or cotton ball over the pierced site and would ask you to apply pressure at the site for a while to facilitate blood coagulation.

One need not be anxious about the procedure as it only causes mild discomfort at the time of the placement of the needle into the vein. The pain experienced varies in each case. While some people do not experience any pain at all; others experience a stinging pain when the blood is drawn.

Do not hesitate to make any related enquiries as it is your right to be well informed. Women, who are pregnant, menstruating or on hormone replacement therapy, must make it a point to inform the health professional as these circumstances could influence your estrogen levels immensely.
