What Is My Ideal Weight ?

Obesity is a very common problem faced by many with the increase in mechanized life and reduced physical activity. It also poses threat to life and thus dealing with it becomes all the more important. Though obesity is nothing but the excess of fat which can lead to many health problems, it is technically considered when the Body Mass Index of a person is greater than 30 kg/m2. The tool called as Body Mass Index (BMI) is thus formed to find if one is weighing what he should at his age and with his height. BMI uses a person’s weight and height to determine this. BMI does not compute the amount of fat in one’s body rather it tells the apt weight for the person under the categories of obese, overweight and underweight. It is a widely accepted and used tool due to its ease of use. A simple Google search of the terms ‘ideal weight’ throws numerous perfect weight and BMI calculators where all you need to do is enter your weight and height.

The calculator then does all the calculations and computes the ideal weight for you. BMI can be calculated manually too by simply dividing your weight in pounds by your height in inches. The result, if less than 18.5, means that you are underweight. If it is between 18.5 and 24.9, you are normal. A number more than 25 and less than 29.9 depicts overweight and that of over 30 shows obesity.

In the matter of ideal weight for women, every one whose height is 5 feet should have a weight of 100 pounds. This idyllic weight should be 5 pounds more for every inch above 5 feet. For men, the ideal weight falls between 97 and 127 pounds when one has a height of 5 feet. For a 6-foot man, the weight should be between 139 and 183 pounds.
