Biometrics History

Biometrics encompasses the various methods used for exclusively identifying humans on the basis of one or more than one inherent behavioral or bodily qualities. Computer science terminology the word biometrics is employed to means to identity admission management and managing right of entry. It is helpful in recognizing singles in groups which are under scrutiny.

The two chief classes it can be categorized into are physiological and behavioral. The former one i.e. physiological is associated to the form or outline of one’s body. These could cover things like aroma, iris recognition, hand geometry, palm print, DNA, face recognition and fingerprint. The latter i.e. behavioral is associated to the actions and proceedings of people. Some of examples are: voice, gait and typing rhythm. This form of biometrics is named as behaviometrics by some researchers.

The 19th century stood a witness to the police officer of Argentina maintaining fingerprint records. He categorized fingerprints into a system made by Sir Francis Galton who was an anthropologist associated to Charles Darwin. Francis wrote a book called ‘Fingerprints’ elaborating upon a cataloging system. It is his principle of every person having a unique fingerprint which we rely on today. 1920s saw fingerprint recognition serving as a tool for law enforcement by being used by the FBI and the US military. The technique of biometrics which use faces, irises, fingers, hands and voice were developed in twentieth century’s ending quarter. The year 1985 saw the just the surfacing of the idea of using irises, the idea after being worked upon was functional as a recognizable system in the year 1993. 1994 saw the patenting of the first recognition algorithm. A year’s gap was given to the commercialization of this idea.

In authentication mode the method authenticates one’s identity by balancing it with the stored biometric information. In the recognition mode, it searches the stored data till the counterpart is not identified. More..
