Heart Murmur In Children

The heart makes a characteristic sound of lub-dub when beating. However, when there is another accompanying sound with the beating of the heart, it is referred to as a heart murmur. Usually, heart murmur in kids should not worry the parents as it occurs quite frequently due to physical exercise, anemia, or any other physical activity.

The heart murmur in children that occurs due to non-health related issues is called innocent heart murmur. Usually, this kind of murmur disappears after some time, or it can stay on without causing the kid any health problems.

However, when the heart murmur in children is on account of cardiac problems, it is called abnormal heart murmur. In kids, this kind of murmur occurs due to a congenital heart disease. Some of the most common congenital heart diseases that cause abnormal heart murmurs in kids are holes in the heart and a defect with the heart valves that does not allow sufficient amounts of blood to flow through or results in the leaking of the blood from one chamber to the next. Usually a hole in the heart can get diagnosed at the time of birth, malformation of the heart valves can either be diagnosed at birth or when the kid grows older.

Heart murmur in children is noticed between 2 heart sounds. When the heart murmur is innocent, the kid will not have any symptoms. However, in abnormal heart murmur, the kid will have bluish colored lips, mouth and fingertips, suffer from shortness of breath, have episodes of fainting, fatigue, pain in the chest while doing a physical activity, appetite loss, fast breathing, profuse sweating and also face problems while swallowing.

If these symptoms are present in your child, you should immediately visit a doctor to get a diagnosis and subsequent treatment.
