Chest Pain Anxiety Treatments
A lot of people who suffer from anxiety attacks often complain of chest pain that is quite similar in characteristic to the pain felt during a heart attack. Hence, it is very common for people suffering from an anxiety attack to think that they are getting a heart attack. However, the chest pain anxiety can be treated using several methods.
Some of the chest pain anxiety treatments are listed below:
- The pain experienced in the chest due to an anxiety attack can be treated using medications like benzodiazepine and anti-depressant. However, make sure that you consult your doctor to ensure that the medication being prescribed is the right one for you as some medications can be addictive in nature and may have serious side effects. While medications may help in treating chest pain anxiety, it is best to couple them with proper behavioral therapy to alleviate the problem completely.
- As mentioned earlier, behavioral therapy is great for tackling anxiety. This therapy is of 2 types, namely cognitive therapy and exposure therapy. In the first type, the therapy aims to change the way a person thinks which has an effect on his or her behavior. Usually, when a person experiences pain in the chest, immediately, he or she will think that it is brought on due to a heart attack when the pain could be due to indigestion or heartburn. So, in behavioral therapy, this process of thinking is altered so that the person can learn to deal with the problem in a right manner. In exposure therapy, the person is exposed either to real or simulated images that help to tackle the main cause of the person's fear. This helps the person to handle his or her fear and this, in turn, allows the person to gain control over his or her behavior.
- Another way to deal with chest pain anxiety is to use various relaxation techniques. These techniques help a person deal with stress which, in turn, ensure that chest pain does not occur. However, in addition to relaxation techniques, the person is also encouraged to exercise. Exercising is also a known stress buster and helps to alleviate the anxiety brought on due to chest pain or vice versa.
It is important to realize that the aforementioned chest pain anxiety treatments are for pain that is not related to cardiac problems. These treatments measures are primarily for the pain that comes with a person suffers from an anxiety attack or panic attack.
