Silent heart attack invariably does not have symptoms, or the symptoms are so mild that they go unnoticed. Usually the silent heart attack symptoms are quite different from the symptoms of a regular heart attack wherein the person experiences severe pain in the chest.

Usually, a person having a silent heart attack first has a silent ischemic attack. In silent ischemia, the supply of blood to the heart is decreased due to a blockage. However, in normal people this would result in pain or angina, but a person suffering from a silent ischemic attack does not experience angina and hence, does not know that he or she is at an increased risk of suffering from a heart attack.

When the arteries supplying blood to the heart get blocked completely and do not exhibit any symptoms, the person suffers from what is known as a silent heart attack. This can happen because the nerves are damaged and hence, the person does not feel any pain in the chest. It is estimated that around fifteen percent of all heart patients suffer from silent heart attacks, and people who are diabetic are more at risk of suffering from this type of heart attack. Also, aged people are at risk of suffering from this type of heart attack. It has been seen that while women do not demonstrate the typical chest pain symptom of a heart attack, they too are prone to having this type of an attack.

In a silent heart attack, the characteristic symptoms of a heart attack are missing. Or, if the symptoms exist, they are so small that they are unnoticed. Many people assume that they are suffering from indigestion or mild heartburn when they have silent heart attack. Some of the minute silent heart attack symptoms are as follows:

• A person can suffer from shortness of breath. However, he or she may assume that the breathlessness is caused due to a physical activity or is a common sign of aging.
• Extreme tiredness is another sign of this kind of heart attack.
• Feeling nauseated and/or vomiting is one more sign. However, these signs are believed to be the symptoms of indigestion and are normally not taken seriously.
• Feeling anxious or sudden feeling of unease also is a silent heart attack symptom.

As per doctors, one-third of all symptoms of heart attacks give early warning signs like chest pain. Hence, knowing the silent heart attack symptoms can help in seeking early treatment for this kind of heart attack and preventing fatalities.
