Cure And Treatment Of A Heart Attack

A heart attack is known as myocardial infarction in medical terminology. This attack occurs when insufficient amounts of oxygen-rich blood reaches the heart due to blockage of the arteries. Hence, that part of the heart tends to die causing the heart attack. The blockage is caused due to plaque formation in the arteries or due to blood clots.

The cure and treatment of a heart attack should not be taken lightly as this condition is a medical emergency that requires immediate treatment. When a person suffers from a heart attack, the first thing that is done is to give the person oxygen so that further damage to the heart can be avoided. Then medication is given to ensure that formation of blood clots is prevented. If the person is in severe pain, he or she will be administered lingual nitroglycerin to reduce the stress on the heart and improve the flow of the blood. Thereafter, the person will have to undergo a battery of tests, like EKG, ECG, blood test and coronary angiography. Thereafter, the real treatment for the heart attack begins.

The cure and treatment of a heart attack depends on severity of the attack. While all heart attacks a serious, the extent of the attack determines the further course of treatment and cure. When the heart attack is mild to moderate one, the person will be administered medication to thin the blood and prevent formation of blood clots. In addition, the person may have to undergo angioplasty to remove the blockage from the artery. In case the heart attack was a severe one with severe blockage, then the person would have to undergo a surgical intervention. This is known as coronary artery bypass surgery. In this procedure, an artery or vein is taken from another part of the body and used to direct the flow of blood to that part of the heart that is not receiving the blood.

After the person is released from the hospital, be it for a mild, moderate or severe heart attack, in order to prevent future attacks, he or she will have to follow certain daily regimens. The person would have to eat heart healthy food, do exercise regularly after consultation with the doctor, and also learn ways to handle stress. The person will have to give up smoking, drinking alcohol, reduce or eliminate salt from the diet and consume fresh green leafy vegetables and fruits. The exercise will be in the form of walking, swimming or light workouts depending on the severity of the attack. All these are considered as measures to prevent future fatal heart attacks, improve the overall health of the person and thereby enhancing the quality of life and longevity.
