As medical science advances, people are now growing older more slowly compared to what they were doing a couple of decades ago. This means that people are living longer and are less prone to ailments and health problems that can cut lives short. While on one hand this is really great; on the other it has several serious repercussions that government and society should take into consideration.

Life extension will cause over population that will take toll on the natural resources that are already being over-exploited. (See Reference 1) More food will have to be grown to cater for the growing population. However, with global warming, droughts and changes in the weather patterns all over the globe, the growing mass of population will be hard pressed to get food. Hence, the people living under poverty levels will increase and this will further strain the already stretch Social Security system even further.

As people will not get access to a proper diet and nutrition, it will have an effect on their health. (See Reference 1) Unfortunately, there will millions of people living, but ailing from poor health and suffering from nutritional deficiencies. This could strain the healthcare system in the country, which is already suffering from lack of trained personnel and proper funding.

There are many who believe that life extension will be available just for people who have the money to pay for it. Hence, this will create a further divide between the rich and poor, as most poor will not have the money to pay for life extension. (See Reference 1) Also, there is a fear that the people living longer will be using most of the healthcare resources, there will not be much for those who are younger.

While these arguments may be futile, but these are some of the reasons why people oppose life extension. With the advances that medical science has made, life extension has become a reality for many. Only coming years will tell whether the arguments for opposing life extension are justified or not.
