How Does Physical Abuse Affect Self Esteem ?

Physical abuse is always a result of violence in anyone’s case. In the case of elderly, grabbing them, shoving or pushing also amounts to physical abuse. If a person is mishandled constantly, they are scared and live in fear. It also results in low self esteem and depression. Violence often has such effects on the elderly to the extent that they become withdrawn.



 

Low self esteem is an emotional disorder that starts off during childhood. There are several reasons why it develops in early stages in life. If a child is not provided safety and love or is constantly criticized or abused by the parents, it ends in low self esteem. Children go through physical and sexual abuse and who are neglected often becomes a victim of this condition. Every crisis a parent goes through has a profound effect on the child like, unemployment issues, marital problems, divorce and financial problems. A child can go through psychological issues, like depression, personality disorders and anxiety at a young age. Psychiatrists observe that such issues directly have a relation with causing low self esteem.

If a parent observes that their child has issues with low self esteem, they should seek help from councilors. The child should be evaluated through a psychological examination. The underlying issues that are causing the problem should be closely examined to prevent problems in their adulthood. Psychological trauma often causes post traumatic disorders. Psychological treatment through medications can solve problems with low self esteem. The medications prescribed correct the depression, improve sleep disorders and also manage stress. Counseling also helps the child to gain confidence and improve their image psychologically. Encouragement is provided for the child to develop positive thinking.

People, who suffer from low self esteem, do not seek help because they are hesitant or afraid. However, the family members should encourage them to seek appropriate medical help as it is very important. People with low self esteem often use illicit substances and drugs, or resort to abusing medications in order to feel better. These things will interfere with their mental state further. Such people often isolate themselves from family members or social situations. Providing a proper social and family support system is utmost important for such people. Medications prescribed by a professional will aim at correcting the problem in their mental status. They are not permanent and can be solved in its early stages with timely action. Recovery from low self esteem is possible for everyone, whether it is a child or an adult.
