Effects Of Physical And Emotional Abuse

Physical and emotional abuse is two forms of violence which can have permanent damaging effect on the victim’s psyche. It also includes sexual abuse. Physical abuse means hurting another person’s body by beating them up, handling them roughly and also through sexual abuse. Emotional abuse includes yelling, criticizing, demeaning and name calling. All of these abuses are considered extremely hurtful and harmful for a person’s self esteem. It also hampers their personal and emotional development in the society.



 

Behavioral Impact
People who go through physical and emotional abuse often find issues with trust and so they alienate themselves from family and friends. Abused individuals also become prey to substance abuse and can turn into abusers themselves. Under the influence of drugs and alcohol they easily hurt others. They think that by hurting others they can prove powerful and as though they can control the situation. Some people resort to suicide because of a feeling of helplessness and hopelessness. People who have been physically and emotionally abused experience a low self esteem and it leads to various other unwanted problems. They start examining them elves closely and become extremely critical of their own behavior. They avoid social events completely. Physical and emotional abuse has detrimental effects on children. Not only does it create low self-esteem, such children perform badly in school and are convinced that no one in the world cares for them or loves them. These children will end up having social issues and will not be able to forge interpersonal relationships.

Emotional Impact
Children and adults, who suffer physical and emotional abuse, develop several emotional problems that interfere with their interpersonal skills. They are prone to depression and sadness. Some of the other symptoms of emotional stress include anxiety, moodiness, guilt and some psychosomatic illnesses. These emotional problems are often related to the illness of the mind. Abused individuals cannot control their emotions and often experience an outburst in some or the other form. They may be experienced by others in an unwarranted fashion.

Physical Impact
Every kind of abuse directly has an impact on physical health. People, who suffer from abuse, also develop insomnia and suffer severe appetite loss. Some of the other problems include headaches and body pains. They also are unable to connect intimately with another person. This can have an impact on marital life and can raise several trust issues.

Dealing with the Effects
If a person has knowledge about the physical and emotional abuse, they should report the matter to the law authorities or seek counseling or discuss the problems with a trusted friend. They offer support in the form of raising the self esteem of the victim and give them the strength to combat such issues themselves.
