Elderly neglect is caused when a caretaker does not impart their duties of care and obligation in the complete sense. Neglect is also caused when a person who has the financial responsibilities to the elderly does not fulfill it. If an elderly has to be taken care of in a home or be attended by a home care service provider, the person responsible has to do it.
Neglect normally means refusing to provide an elderly with support for every day life, such as food, shelter, clothing and medicines. This refusal can be intentional or unintentional. At times, the caregiver may not realize what the senior wants, and hence, end up unintentionally neglecting the person.
The neglect may be caused due to ignorance of the situation or even intentionally. Here are some of the signs of elderly neglect.
Neglect cannot be observed easily in an elderly, as it does not usually show any visible signs. Inadequate water and food, unfriendly environment, loneliness and even not changing the under clothes of an elderly is a result of neglect. If the elderly is incapable of doing it themselves, then someone should be appointed to take care of the person. Elderly, who are not in their physical health, should be assisted while they are bathing, eating or walking. They even require help of someone to do their grocery shopping and pay their bills on time. However, if the caregiver does not fulfill these duties, it amounts to neglect. Verbal abuse also goes unnoticed several times.
Several times the elderly will be unwilling to talk about such issues. As their loved one you should attentive to notice the signs of neglect yourself. You can supervise if their living conditions are nice. You can also personally check their nails, hair and body to ensure that they are being groomed properly. Also, look for other physical changes, such as sudden loss of weight for no reason. There is a possibility that they are not being fed properly. Most of the signs of elderly neglect may not be definitive, but can be indicators with a fine underline.
