Several seniors, who go through substance abuse, may actually never get the required help. Statistics show that 9 out 10 seniors do not seek help. Diagnosing substance abuse in a senior is a difficult task as several factors are involved. At the same time treating them is a bigger challenge. It is very important for the family members to identify the problem and help the senior with the drug or alcohol issue.

Family members often do not recognize substance abuse signs in the elderly, who are usually in denial. Even family members can be in denial. They think that drinking is a harmless thing for them which give pleasure and they do not want to take away or deprive that privilege. If the elderly lives alone, then the loved ones often overlook the problem. Most people do not seek treatment because they claim that they do not have a problem with substance abuse.

It is difficult for family members to determine if the alcohol is an issue for the elderly. They are also used to taking several drugs at that age. It becomes difficult for the physician also to identify because of the medications. The symptoms of substance abuse mimic other pre-existing conditions. With the increasing age, the elderly become more anxious and also are prone to developing dementia. They have regular falls because of the confusion caused by alcohol. With such tragedies other medical conditions are blamed.

There are some common signs of substance abuse in the seniors. Sometimes they can get arrested for drunk drinking. But elderly, who do not have a job or do not drive, such tell tale signs are absent. The addiction in seniors is less visible compared to others. The symptoms get worse if the elderly lives alone.

There are a very few drug rehabilitation centers in the United States that offer help to the elderly. They lack the transport facilities and additional expertise that is required for taking care of the elderly. For example, a drug rehabilitation center only concentrates on drug abuse and such problems. They do not venture into elderly care. In the same way, elderly care facilities do not offer rehabilitation as it is not a medical problem. Unfortunately, for the elderly because of their condition both should be available at the same place. Rehabilitation treatments are very expensive and they are not covered by insurance companies. For several such reasons elderly who need treatment do not find it at the right time.
