What The Bible Says About Cremation ?

As burials are extremely expensive these days, many people prefer to have the remains of their loved ones cremated instead of have a burial. However, practicing Christians are wary of cremations. They want to be certain that cremation is approved by the Bible and they are following proper religious norms for their loved ones.

Strangely, there is no specific reference of cremation in the Bible. While there are accounts of cremation taking place in Bible, it was not a practice that was observed by the early followers of Christianity.  Today, most orthodox and fundamental Christian denominations prohibit cremation. There are also some believers who are against cremation because they believe that bodies that have died will resurrect one day and get united with their spirits and souls. And, if a body is cremated, then it is destroyed and it will not be possible for the body to resurrect and unite with spirit and soul. This belief is mentioned in Corinthians 15:35-55 and also in Thessalonians 4:16.

The main people mentioned in the Old Testament were buried after they died. In ancient Israel, it was a dishonor for the entire community if a deceased was not given a proper burial.  And, the ones who were burned as per the Bible, were often meted this treatment as a punishment. Hence, many Christians are against cremation.

The Roman Catholic Church was against cremation for quite some time, and it is only recently in the 21st century that the Church has said that cremation is allowed and acceptable by the Church. However, it still gives preference to burials over cremations.

Christians who believe in cremation often claim that God has the power to renew life to a body that has been burned and this will allow a cremated body to reunites with its spirit and soul. And, if God does not have this power, then all Christians who died in fire will never get access to their heavenly bodies.
